My research aims to understand how to best serve the 12 million school-age, language-minority children in the United States. To this end, I examine the cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms underlying bilingual and biliteracy development, as well as the external factors (e.g., subtractive educational programming, socioeconomic status) that impact bilingual and biliteracy development. I take an interdisciplinary approach; indeed, my work lies at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and education. I rely on both behavioral and neuroimaging measures to study the cross-linguistic, cross-modal processes underlying multilingual development. My long-term goal is to become a leader in the field of multilingualism.
