Appendix III - Certification Procedures

For an investigator or student to be allowed to operate the scanner at the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging, it is necessary that they provide a valid MR Operator Certification. This certification is conferred by the Technical Committee of the Center, under the guidance of the Center’s Director. Certifications are valid for one year, after which time a recertification must be obtained.

Procedure to Obtain Certification

  1. Candidates must have completed a course on MRI/fMRI. If a course is taken at another institution, the Center Director must certify it as equivalent.
  2. All candidates must have completed both MR safety training at the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging and the University- wide lab safety and hazardous waste training. MR safety training sessions are available at the Center every two months. The sessions will cover the subjects described in the Safety Manual (Appendix I).
  3. All candidates must pass a safety quiz covering the instruction mentioned in the paragraph above.
  4. All candidates must have at least 10 hours of supervised operating experience.
  5. All candidates must pass a “driving” test administered by the fMRI Physics Manager or Center Director. This test will include evidence of proficiency in operating the scanner.
  6. The certification will be issued by the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging, signed by the examiner, a member of the Management Committee, and in the case of a student, the faculty sponsor.
  7. This certification is valid for a year. Candidates must also take the safety training procedures every year.
